The German track cycling world champions Lea-Sophie Friedrich (Dassow) and Emma Hinze (Cottbus) won Olympic silver in the team sprint.

In the race for gold on Monday, the duo only had to admit defeat to the Chinese world record holders Zhong Tianshi and Bao Shanju (31.895) in 31.980 seconds and thus won the first precious metal for the Bund Deutscher Radfahrer (BDR) on the first day of the competitions at the Izu Velodrome.

In the qualification (32.102) and in the run-up (31.905), Hinze (23) and starter Friedrich (21) undercut the German record of 2013.
