Usain Bolt's Olympic career ended in Rio de Janeiro.

But the entertainment in the men's 100 meters remains, albeit in a somewhat unexpected way.

After 9.77 in early June, Trayvon Bromell was one of the big gold favorites for the men's 100 meters.

But the world setter had problems already in the trials and then disappeared somewhat unexpectedly already in the semifinals.

Instead, the men's Olympic final in the 100 meters offered some surprises - as a Chinese and an Italian medal candidate.

Lamont Marcell Jacobs was born in the USA, but grew up with his mother in Italy.

Now he is a somewhat unpredictable Olympic champion, having set a European record in both the semis and the final.

That the tracks at the Olympic Stadium in Tokyo are really fast became clear already in the women's 100-meter final, where the Jamaican Elaine Thompson-Herah won at 10.60 - the second fastest time ever.

On the men's side, the Chinese Su Bingtian and the American Ronnie Baker offered 9.83 seconds already in their semifinal, which the Chinese won by two thousandths to spare.

In the same semi, Lamont Marcell Jacobs also set a new European record with 9.84.

He improved that further in the final.

The Italian got off to a good start, but did not advance to the lead until towards the end of the race and won at 9.80.

Fred Kerley, USA, took silver at 9.84 and Canadian Andre de Grasse bronze at 9.89.
