Huge sensation in the 100m final!

Italian Lamont Marcell Jacobs won the flagship event of the Tokyo Olympic Games on Sunday, succeeding sprint legend Usain Bolt, triple champion in 2008, 2012 and 2016.

Jacobs won in 9'80 '' (new European record) and became the first European Olympic champion on the straight since the Briton Linford Christie in 1992. He beat the American Fred Kerley (9'84 ' ') and the Canadian Andre de Grasse (9'89' ').

A final more open than ever

This is a huge achievement for the 26-year-old sprinter, born in El Paso, Texas to an Italian mother and an American father since it is the first Olympic 100m title for an Italian and the first podium on the straight line.

In the absence of the American world champion Christian Coleman, suspended for three "no shows", and after the elimination in the semi-finals of the best performer of the year (9'77 "), the American Trayvon Bromell, the Olympic 100m was one of the most open in history, four years after the retirement of three-time defending champion and world record holder (9'58 '') Usain Bolt.
