The Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic leaves the Olympic Games in Tokyo without a single medal.

One day after his semi-final defeat against Alexander Zverev, the world number one surprisingly lost the bronze game against Spaniard Pablo Carreno-Busta 4: 6, 7: 6 (8: 6), 3: 6 on Saturday.

The bronze medal in Beijing in 2008 remains his only single success at the Olympics.

At the beginning of the third set, Djokovic was so annoyed against world number 11 Carreno-Busta that he first threw a racket on the deserted grandstand and a little later smashed another racket.

No chance of a Golden Slam

The Serb had gambled away the chance of his first Olympic victory and the Golden Slam in the semifinals against Zverev.

The Hamburger sensationally prevailed with 1: 6, 6: 3, 6: 1 and on Sunday can win against the Russian surprise finalist Karen Chatschanow as the first German Olympic champion in the men's singles.

Djokovic has triumphed at the Australian Open, the French Open and Wimbledon this season. The top star can still make the Grand Slam perfect with the title at the US Open in September. The last time the Australian Rod Laver succeeded in winning the four most important tennis tournaments in one calendar year was in 1969. Djokovic would also have needed Olympic gold for the Golden Slam.
