The 36-year-old Keizer and the five-year-younger Meppelink already narrowly lost the first two group matches against Spain and China (two times 1-2) and had to beat the US to even have a chance of a place in the next round.

The Dutch duo started the crucial match strongly and won the first set against April Ross and Alix Klineman, contenders for the Olympic title.

The American women fought back in the second set and were supreme in the decisive company.

It was Meppelink's third time participating in the Olympic Games.

Five years ago in Rio de Janeiro she formed a duo with Marleen van Iersel and with her she reached the eighth finals at the time.

Since 2017, Meppelink has formed a couple with Keizer, who had been away for a few years.

Together they became European champions in 2018.
