Germany, a silver medalist five years ago, needed to win against Ivory Coast in the group stage to finish as one of the group's two top teams, but the match at Miyagistadion in Rifu ended 1-1.

The opponent started with Benjamin Henrichs pushing the ball into his own goal in the 67th minute and when Germany only managed to make a forward, Eduard Löwen in the 73rd, it was not enough to secure promotion from Group D.

Instead, it will be the Ivory Coast that makes the group winner Brazil, gold medalist in 2016 and who got 3-1 in the group final against Saudi Arabia, company to the quarterfinals.

South Korea, 6-0 against Honduras, and New Zealand, 0-0 against Romania, are also on to the quarterfinals.
