There were great contrasts in the ladies' qualifiers.

Olympic debutant Zaza faced off against 39-year-old Beijing-born Austrian Liu Jia who made her sixth Olympics.

Zaza was peppered and hung on well in the duels despite his young age, the game was offensive and disrespectful.

She led 6-2 in the second set and was about to equalize to 1-1 in the set but Liu Jia was too confident and experienced and effectively ground down her 27 year younger opponent.

Liu Jia won 4-0 (11-4.11-9.11-3.11-5).

Represents Syria and a refugee team

At 3-6 in the third set, Zaza and her coach timed out without succeeding in reversing the trend.

The Austrian hit the match ball and the players thanked for hitting the rackets against each other.

Naomi Osaka ended the inauguration by lighting the fire at midnight Japanese time at the Olympic Stadium where athletics will take place.

Then Zaza stood on the inner court and followed the event.

At 09.45 the match started in Tokyo Metropolitan Gym Table.

Zaza competes under the Syrian flag but represents an IOC hand-picked refugee team.

- When I was five or six years old, my brother won a championship.

Then I decided to do as he did, and started training, Zaza has previously told Al Jazeera.
