Former national player and current DFB ambassador Jimmy Hartwig wants to become president of the German Football Association (DFB).

The 66-year-old announced this on Thursday on the news channel Welt.

“It's time for change.

I want to become president of the DFB, ”said Hartwig.

For some in the world's largest sports association, “don't just pay lip service.

And to pave the way for guys like Jimmy Hartwig.

Let's go to new shores!

We want to make a difference. "

Hartwig's candidacy is supported by Dagmar Freitag (SPD), the chairman of the sports committee in the Bundestag.

"Jimmy Hartwig is one of the most outstanding national team players in our country for many reasons, and not just because of his footballing skills," said Freitag.

Hartwig had already expressed his interest in a dpa interview in May and said it would be "a statement" to propose someone like him for the office.

The DFB is currently looking for a successor to Fritz Keller, who left in May.

Peter Peters and Rainer Koch currently lead the association on an interim basis.

Now Hartwig said it was time for a “dark-skinned player, a former national player who has gone through all the ups and downs.

He knows what makes amateurs and youth teams tick ”.

As a player, Hartwig was three times German champion with Hamburger SV, in 1983 he won the European Cup with the Hanseatic League. After the career, he survived two cancers and became a stage actor. In addition to Hartwig, the former national goalkeeper Katja Kraus is also traded as a presidential candidate, many other prominent names have already waved them off.
