Guinea will not participate in the Tokyo Olympics.

According to the African country's sports minister, there are too many concerns about the increase in the number of corona infections, although there are also sounds that it is a financial issue.

A total of five athletes (four men and one woman) from Guinea would make their appearance in Tokyo.

A wrestler, a judoka, two swimmers and a 100-meter athlete had qualified for the Games.

The sports minister of Guinea recently wrote to the country's Olympic committee that the five athletes will not leave for Tokyo because of the worrying corona figures.

However, government sources in the capital Conakry claim that the five qualified athletes are not going for financial reasons.

The government could not afford the costs.

Guinea is the second country not to send athletes to the Games, after North Korea had already decided not to participate earlier this year.

The dictatorially governed country did not want to send athletes to Tokyo because of the corona pandemic.

The Olympic Games will officially open on Friday and will run through August 8.
