Everton suspended an unnamed player on Tuesday after he was arrested by police on suspicion of child abuse.

The club is not naming names or sharing further details about the case.

According to police, the player was arrested and questioned by officers on Friday and has been released on bail pending further investigation.

"We will continue to support the authorities in their investigation. For now, we will leave it at that," is all Everton would like to say in a short statement.

Everton finished tenth in the Premier League last season under manager Carlo Ancelotti.

'The Toffees' thus missed European football and Ancelotti left for Real Madrid.

Rafael Benítez was appointed as his successor at the end of last month.

That led to threats against the 61-year-old Spaniard, who previously had Everton's arch-rival Liverpool under his wing.

For Everton, the new Premier League season starts on Saturday 14 August with a home game against Southampton.
