Lewis Hamilton took home the victory at Silverstone in England on Sunday, but it was not without controversy.

On the first lap, the Briton tried to get past the top competitor Max Verstappen on the inside when he hooked in the Dutchman's rear wheel.

This led to Verstappen losing control of the car and crashing into the protective barriers.

The World Cup leader was able to get out of the car for his own machine, but was taken to hospital.

Hamilton was penalized with a ten-second extra time for the incident, but still managed to win the race.

Condemns racist comments

In retrospect, the seven-time world champion has been exposed to racism on social media.

"The racist insults directed at Hamilton during and after the UK GP are unacceptable and we have removed several comments from Instagram," a Facebook spokesperson said in a statement.

The FIA, Mercedes and Formula 1 have condemned the comments in a joint statement.

"These people have no place in our sport and those responsible should be held accountable for their actions," they write.

"All drivers and teams work to build a more inclusive sport and such unacceptable cyber hatred must be brought to light and eliminated."
