Gustav Svensson has donned the blue and yellow suit for the last time.

This summer's European Championships, which ended with a draw in the round of 16 against Ukraine, became the 34-year-old's last championship.

- I am grateful to have had that opportunity and all the friends I have made along the way.

I want to extend an extra big thank you to all teammates, fans and leaders for great years, says Gustav Svensson to SvFF.

In total, there were 32 international matches for the defensive midfielder, who is currently training with IFK Gothenburg.

The playing time in the European Championships was short, only a two minute long break in the group game against Slovakia.

- Gustav has been with us for a long time and has always been incredibly professional even though he has not always played that much.

He has always been ready and always done his best in training as a match.

Wish Gustav great luck in the future, says national team captain Janne Andersson.

"A bunch of super professionals"

Gustav Svensson joins Marcus Berg, Mikael Lustig, Sebastian Larsson and Andreas Granqvist, who all chose to end their national team careers shortly after the championship.

- It is a bunch of guys who have made great efforts for us both on and off the field.

A generation of players who have taken great responsibility when it comes to setting a high level in everything we do as a national team.

They should all feel very proud of the great efforts of the men's national team for a long time.

A bunch of super professionals quite simply, says the league captain and continues:

- As I have said many times before, we have several other players who have good leadership qualities. Now it's up to them to step forward and take up more space and it's up to me to push them. I am convinced that there will be a new generation of leaders in the national team who are equally dedicated and professional.
