The death of the Argentine legend Diego Maradona touched the hearts of his fans all over the world, and the number of those who joined the Maradona Church “consecrated” in his name increased in different countries such as Argentina, Italy, Brazil, and most recently Mexico, which opened a church bearing Maradona’s name in the state of Buella.

The American newspaper "The Wall Street Journal" reported that the Maradona Church is not considered an actual faith group, but rather is closer to a fan club that has taken on a devotional character, whose adherents imitate some of the rituals of the Christian religion, as an expression of their fondness for the late star. Through it, they practice rituals that mimic masses, prayers, baptism, and other methods of worship.

For its part, Russia Today channel published pictures of Maradona's church in Mexico, and said that its entrance contains a pair of large vases bearing footballs and a picture of Maradona wearing a Charo hat welcoming worshipers, and pictures of meetings with the late Cuban leader Fidel Castro and Pope Francis.

She pointed out that in the church there is an altar and the floor is covered with artificial grass and has spherical shapes, while on the sides there are chairs decorated with shirts from different teams, both Mexican, Argentine and European, as well as national teams from all over the world.

She explained that the followers of the Maradona Church in several countries around the world exceed half a million people.

It is noteworthy that the Maradona church in Mexico is considered the second of its kind in the world, as there is in Argentina the first church in the city of Rosario that was established by fans of the footballer Maradona in 1998.

Maradona had died on November 25, 2020 at the age of 60 due to a heart attack after a brain operation.
