The videos showed English fans attacking the Italian fans in the stadium, specifically when they exited the Wembley gate, where they were waiting for them and kicked and punched them in anger at their loss of the title.

For his part, British Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, condemned the racist abuses that England players were also subjected to on social media, and said on his Twitter account: "This English team deserves to be praised as heroes, and they should not be subjected to racial abuse on social media." "Those responsible for these horrific violations should be ashamed of themselves," he added.

Police said they would also investigate comments made against black England players Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka, who missed a penalty shootout with Italy after the 1-1 draw.

England tweeted: "We are disgusted that some members of our squad - who gave everything for the shirt this summer - were subjected to online discriminatory abuse after tonight's game."

"We will do everything we can to support the affected players, while urging the strongest possible sanctions against anyone responsible," he said in a statement.

London police officials said they were aware of the offensive and racist comments and would take action. "They will not be tolerated and will be investigated."
