The European champions have landed in Rome.

Team captain Giorgio Chiellini, wearing a crown, lifted the dent against the Italian sky in front of supporters who went to the airport to meet their heroes.

A smiling Leonardo Spinazzola, who played a crucial role in the Italian team before injuring himself in the quarter-finals, jumped down the steps from the plane on his crutches to the cheers of the supporters.

Prime Minister Mario Draghi was also in the waiting line-up and took the opportunity to take pictures with the players.

The team has been hailed with headlines such as "We are Europe!"

and "Italy is the Queen of Europe", but there will be no parade of tributes through central Rome.

According to the Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, the application was not approved.

This afternoon, however, the team will meet the country's president, Sergio Mattarella.
