Novak Djokovic is writing a new page in tennis history!

The Serbian won in the final of the Wimbledon tournament for the sixth time in his career, Sunday against the Italian Matteo Berrettini (N.7) in four sets (6-7 [4], 6-4, 6- 4, 6-3).

Novak Djokovic joins Swiss Roger Federer and Spaniard Rafael Nadal with 20 major titles.

The world number one therefore always has the possibility of achieving the calendar Grand Slam, that is to say of winning all four major tournaments of the year.

A performance that has not been achieved since the Australian Rod Laver in 1969.

Led by a set, Djokovic did not doubt

The start of the final was however more difficult than expected for the Serbian.

After a controlled tournament, where he lost only one set in the first round, Novak Djokovic seemed well on his way to easily triumph over his opponent.

At 5-2 in his favor, the world number one, however, began to foil, restoring confidence to the Italian.

Matteo Berrettini then took advantage of the Serbian's unforced errors (10 in the first set) to make his power speak for the forehand and the service and conclude the decisive game on an ace (7-6 {4]).

It did not take more to motivate Novak Djokovic. In his garden, the Serbian quickly set the record straight by taking twice, starting from the second round, the service of the Italian thanks to his quality of turner. Even if he appeared again feverish at the end of the set, conceding the break at 5-1, Novak Djokovic hardened the exchanges to finally win on a white service game (6-4).

Bis repeated

at the start of the third set.

The Serbian pushed the Italian to play one more stroke with each rally to get him to crack on his serve in the third game. An advantage that Novak Djokovic kept throughout the set and which allowed him to take the ahead in this final (6-4).

It was finally with wear, in the fourth round, that the world number one took the upper hand over Matteo Berrettini.

On the service of the Italian at 5-3, Novak Djokovic has always thrown the ball on the other side of the net, forcing the world number 7 to raise his level of play. The Serbian won on the 47th direct foul of the Italian to win his sixth Wimbledon, his twentieth Grand Slam title, on his third match point (6-3).

The Golden Slam in the sights

After his victories at the Australian Open and Roland Garros in early June, Novak Djokovic can now win a fourth major in a row in New York, for the US Open at the end of August-beginning of September.

If he confirms his participation in the Olympic Games in Tokyo this summer, the Serbian also has the opportunity to perform the "Golden Slam", which only the German Steffi Graff succeeded in 1988. Still great challenges for one of the best players in tennis history.

Djokovic "shared" on his participation in the Olympics

After his victory in the Wimbledon final, Novak Djokovic expressed hesitation about his participation in the Tokyo Olympics (July 23-August 8) due to new health restrictions in force in Japan. "My plans have always been to participate in the Olympics. But now I'm a bit divided. It's 50/50 because of what I've been hearing for two days," he said. The fact that the Games will ultimately take place mainly behind closed doors in the face of the resurgence of the coronavirus in Japan "is not good news (...) I was very disappointed when I heard about it", commented Djokovic. The Olympic tennis tournament is set to start on July 24 and end on August 1, two weeks after the London Grand Slam.
