There have never been so many goals scored in a European Championship.

With 123 achievements, Euro 2020 far exceeds Euro 2016 (108 goals) and has an average of 2.8 goals per game.

A particularly prolific edition, far, however, from Euro 1976 ...

Despite an extended season due to the pandemic, Euro 2020 is not left out in terms of spectacle.

Before the quarter-finals which begin on Friday, 123 goals were scored in 44 matches (the highest total in a European championship), an average of 2.8 goals per game.

A ratio never seen since the 1976 edition. By way of comparison, Euro 2016 in France with the same format with 24 teams (51 matches in all) has "only" totaled only 108 goals on the whole of the competition.

The 2020 edition asserts itself as the most spectacular edition.

Particularly spectacular round of 16

This is evidenced by his particularly high goalscoring average in his round of 16 where 29 goals were scored in eight matches, or 3.6 per game.

The spectacular Croatia-Spain (3-5) and France-Switzerland (3-3, 5-4 tab) helped raise the overall ratio of the competition.

Only two games ended in a goalless draw 0-0 (Spain-Sweden and England-Scotland).

With 2.8 goals per game since the start, Euro 2020 is doing better than the financial years 2016 (2.16), 2012, 2008 and 2004 (2.4), and the edition is also superior to Euro 2000 , also prolific (2.74 goals per game).

A record of 4.75 goals per game to qualify

The European Championship, played all over the continent, will have a hard time matching the Euro 1976 goal average, which was 4.75 per game. A figure to be qualified, however: the edition played in Yugoslavia had hosted only four teams, and 19 goals had been scored in four matches. If Euro 2020 continues on its same trend in the quarter-finals and in the last four, the competition would really become the most prolific.
