The Czech Republic was heavily tipped for defeat in the round of 16 against the Netherlands.

The Netherlands with three straight victories in the group stage would "just move on".

But the Netherlands put themselves in a difficult position when defender Matthis De Ligt was sent off in the 55th minute.

De Ligt took the ball by hand as the last man in the defense, and after a VAR review, he received a red card and had to leave the field.

The Czech superiority used the numerical superiority mercilessly.

Meets Denmark in the quarterfinals

After 68 minutes, Tomas Holes sent a free kick in high over the penalty box.

And 13 minutes later, the Czech Republic definitely fell the big favorite when Patrik Schick shot 2-0.

The Netherlands had their sharpest chance just before De Ligt's expulsion.

Donyell Malen came completely with Czech goalkeeper Tomas Vaclik made an elegant free-kick save.

The European Championships are over for the Netherlands.

The Czech Republic continues to play - and will face Denmark in the quarterfinals next Saturday.
