She had already passed the qualifying limit.

But now it is also confirmed.

Laurel Hubbard will participate in the ladies' 87-kilo class, the New Zealand Olympic Committee states in a statement.

"I feel grateful and humbled by the kindness and support that so many New Zealanders have shown me," Hubbard said in the statement.

Low testosterone levels

43-year-old Hubbard was born in a male body, but corrected the gender of a woman in her 30s.

She previously competed as a man, but was allowed to start competing with the ladies after she showed sufficiently low testosterone levels.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) allows transgender people to compete as long as testosterone levels are low enough, below 10 nanomoles per liter.

That criterion is met by Hubbard.

The decision to allow Hubbard to participate in the Olympics has been questioned, including by former athletes.

Critics say the IOC does not take into account what it considers to be the benefits of having undergone puberty.
