The start of Torrey Pines in San Diego was postponed for an hour and a half due to a dense morning fog.

Once out on the track, it was a really heavy day for the only Swedish element, Henrik Stenson, in the major competition.

The 45-year-old hit par on the first two holes, and followed it up with a birdie on the third - but it did not get more fun than that.

Stenson's first bogey came on the seventh hole and then another on the ninth.

And it would get worse.

On the last eight holes, the Swede hit five bogeys and a birdie, in total he stands at five over par after the initial round.

Heavy for Mickelson

It was also difficult for Phil Mickelson.

The veteran took a sensational victory in the PGA Championship earlier this year, but the hunt for his career's first US Open title - the only major he lacks - got off to a flying start.

The 51-year-old landed on four strokes over par after five bogeys.

It went better for the American Russell Henley who is in the lead at the moment with four strokes under par.

The first round was interrupted before all players had time to finish playing, as darkness fell over San Diego.

By then, about forty players had not gotten around, among them world setter Dustin Johnson and last year's winner Bryson DeChambeau.
