It was Ukraine who came into the match the fastest in terms of play.

The yellow-clad owned a lot of ball and were the team that mainly went forward.

Northern Macedonia had a hard time resisting and the back line was tested again and again, but it took a while before Ukraine got a clear, five-star goal chance.

When the first real opportunity came, however, no mistakes were made.

Then it was Andriy Yarmolenko who stepped forward and the 31-year-old kept a careful lead in the 29th minute after a corner and could easily poke the ball into goal with his right foot (!).

Ukraine 2-0

After 39 minutes, a mistake by the home side's left defense allowed Goran Pandev to get through.

The 37-year-old ran free and artistically chipped in a goal.

But it was ruled out due to offside.

Minutes later, Mykola Sjaparenko was so eager to expand Ukraine's leadership that he tried illicit actions.

He fell in the penalty area - after close contact with a North Macedonian defender - but did not manage to fool the referee and instead received a yellow card.

Strong opening Northern Macedonia

Northern Macedonia started the second half strong and came to a sharp position immediately.

Arijan Ademi combined to make it 2 - 0, as he successfully challenged the guests' central defenders, then placed the ball unreachably at the keeper's right post.

Then Ukraine's Ruslan Malinovsky chose to present his sharp left foot.

The outfielder pulled with a heavy free kick that the goalkeeper had to stretch out on.

Northern Macedonia refused to give up.

A minor foul erupted in the penalty area in the 56th minute and Goran Pandev was sent off - a penalty to the red-clad.

Ezgjan Alioski took care of it but acted weakly in the first stage and missed to thunder shortly afterwards in his own return.

Ukraine 2-1

Do you remember Malinovsky's left foot?

It would, via a free kick, arrange a penalty for Ukraine and he then stepped forward himself to take it.

He would not have done that.

The shot went into perfect goalkeeping height and Dimitrievski saved.
