Austria achieved its first victory in a European football championship.

The selection of the German national coach Franco Foda won on Sunday against the EM debutants North Macedonia 3: 1 (1: 1).

The Gladbacher Stefan Lainer (18th), Michael Gregoritsch from FC Augsburg (78th) and the former Bundesliga professional Marko Arnautovic (89th) scored the goals on Sunday in front of 13,000 spectators in Bucharest.

Former star Goran Pandev had made it 1-1 for the outsider in the meantime (28th).

In 2008 and 2016, the Austrians left without a win after the group stage of the European Championship.

The North Macedonians, who sensationally defeated Germany in the World Cup qualification at the end of March, narrowly missed their first successful European Championship.

In Group C, Ukraine and co-favorites Netherlands are still waiting for both teams.
