Rinus van Kalmthout finished on the podium for the third time in his career in the IndyCar Series on Saturday.

The 20-year-old driver crossed the finish line in second place in the seventh race of the season in Detroit.

Van Kalmthout started from twelfth position and looked to be on his way to third, but benefited from a restart after a heavy crash by Felix Rosenqvist.

The Swede's accelerator stuck, after which he flew hard into the tire stack.

He was conscious after the crash.

After the restart, Van Kalmthout moved up one place.

The Ed Carpenter Racing driver kept the Mexican Pato O'Ward behind him in an exciting battle.

The win went to former Formula 1 driver Marcus Ericsson.

Last year in Indianapolis, Van Kalmthout drove a third place finish to his first podium in the IndyCar Series during his debut season.

Last month he recorded a historic victory in the same Indianapolis.

'VeeKay' is the number five in the standings thanks to his new podium spot in Detroit.

Nine more races follow, of which the next Sunday is again in Detroit.
