Tadej Pogacar won the second stage in the Tour of Slovenia on Thursday after a long attack.

With the race in his own country, the UAE Emirates rider is preparing for the Tour de France, where he defends the yellow jersey.

Pogacar also took over the leader's jersey from Phil Bauhaus in the Tour of Slovenia.

The German won the opening stage in a bunch sprint on Wednesday.

The Slovenian attacked on the penultimate climb with 23 kilometers to go.

He was more than a minute ahead of a chasing group of ten riders.

At 1.23 from Pogacar, his compatriot Matej Mohoric (Bahrain Victorious) took second place.

The stage was dominated by Pogacar's team.

Diego Ulissi (third), Rafal Majka (seventh) and Jan Polanc (tenth) also finished in front.

Fifth victory for Pogacar in 2021

It is Pogacar's fifth day success this season.

Previously, the Slovenian won Liège-Bastogne-Liège and booked stage victories in the United Arab Emirates, Tirreno-Adriatico and the Tour of the Basque Country.

In the UAE and the Tirreno he also won the final classification, in the Basque Country the victory went to Jumbo-Visma rider Primoz Roglic.

The Tour de France starts on June 26 in Brest.

Pogacar, along with Roglic and INEOS rider Geraint Thomas, is the big favorite for the biggest cycling race of the year.
