After a trip on the mountain bike, Mathieu van der Poel immediately struck again as a road cyclist on Monday.

The all-rounder on the bike won the hilly second stage in the Tour of Switzerland.

"This was a nice stage to return to road cycling," said Van der Poel shortly after his victory in the town of Lachen.

"It was a bit of a classic course at the end, even with the rain. That suits me very well."

On Sunday 'VDP' finished 25th in the opening time trial.

A day later, he recorded his fifth road win of the season.

At 3 kilometers from the finish, the Dutch champion jumped away from a small group of favorites, which had survived the last short but steep climb.

He left behind world champion Julian Alaphilippe, Richard Carapaz and Marc Hirschi, among others.

Only Maximilian Schachmann was able to follow Van der Poel, but the German had no chance in the sprint.

"If you see which great riders are riding here, this is certainly a very nice victory," said Van der Poel.
