Exceptions to the corona quarantine obligation will apply in Germany for the European football championship.

This exception rule for the European Championship, which is limited to July 28, covers everyone who has been accredited by the respective organizing committee for participation, preparation, implementation and follow-up of international sporting events, as the cabinet decided on Wednesday in Berlin.

So not only footballers will be exempt from the obligation to register and segregation after entering a so-called virus variant area, but also journalists who report on the games, for example.

The transport ban actually imposed for such areas does not apply to these cases either.

However, strict protection and hygiene concepts should apply around the event.

Major sporting event

Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) had already announced the exception regulation last week and justified it with the importance of this major sporting event.

Great Britain is considered a virus variant area because of the spread of the Delta variant (B.1.617.2), which was first discovered in India. This means that only German nationals and people residing in Germany are currently allowed to enter the Federal Republic from there. Everyone has to be in quarantine for 14 days, even if a negative corona test is present before this period has expired. This would cause problems not only for German national players who are under contract with an English club, but also if a team played in London and then has to travel to Munich for the quarter-finals.

In principle, the quarantine rules with the amended regulation should continue to apply until July 28th. However, an exception to the registration and quarantine requirements will be introduced for high-ranking diplomats who do not stay in Germany for more than 72 hours. A hygiene concept with daily tests is a prerequisite for this.
