Finding a new base for a national team squad of around 50 people is not something that is done in the blink of an eye, but in a short time Pettersson and his staff found the solution: A hotel in Gothenburg, with Gothia Park Academy as a training facility.

- The base camp has been the big issue to solve.

Everyone has lined up fantastically well, like the hotel in Gothenburg, our people, those who deal with events, says Pettersson.

He also says that it would have been much easier if you had already chosen to be in a place in Sweden.

Instead, they were forced to cancel the camp outside Dublin, something that Uefa said they will compensate.

Whether it will be full or not remains to be seen.

Uefa understands our difficulties and was as desperate as everyone else that it happened as it did for us three countries (Sweden, Slovakia and Poland) that were affected.

I do not think we will lose a lot of millions because we changed base camps, but we have had to do the job and put a lot of hours into it.

Base plate of 90 million

The loss of income due to absenteeism last year was estimated at somewhere around SEK 40-50 million.

To this must be added the spectator-free international matches against Finland and Armenia before the European Championships.

In that perspective, a missed European Championship play-off had had consequences for the association.

The promotion to the European Championships alone yielded 9.25 million euros, with today's exchange rate just over 90 million kronor.

A successful group game and the federal treasury is really replenished.

TT: Do you feel pressure to succeed in the European Championships to generate income that has been lost due to the pandemic?

- No, I do not think there is any difference in our thinking from previous championships.

We want to perform as well as possible in a playoff.

To "war" more to make money ... it does not work that way.

However, the players have shown great understanding of the situation.

In the autumn, they waived compensation from the matches.

"It was too quick a decision"

The format of the playoffs, with venues around Europe, Stefan Pettersson hopes not to experience again.

- When you hatched this idea, it sounded fun, but then you realized that it brought with it a lot of logistical problems.

It was perhaps too quick a decision and it will probably not happen again, he says.
