On the gravel in Paris, Serena Williams lost in two straight sets - 3-6, 5-7 - against Kazakh Jelena Rybakina.

A thigh-clad Williams made many serious mistakes, while the 21-year-old was largely stable and is now in his first grand slam quarterfinal.

Rybakina gained the upper hand early in the first set, Williams managed to break back.

But when the game was not right, Rybakina broke again until 5-3.

And could then serve home the first set.

The second on the Philippe-Chatrier course was smoother, and both broke each other's serve twice.

Then Rybakina did again.

At 5-5, she zeroed Serena - and then the Kazakh managed her first match ball.

"Nervous"

- I am so happy with my match, it was fantastic.

Of course I was nervous, I did not serve so well in the last match, but I am glad that I was able to control my nerves in the end, says Jelena Rybakina in the victory interview on the court.

In the quarterfinals, the Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, who beat the Belarusian Victoria Azarenka, 2-1 in sets, awaits in her quarterfinals.

For Serena Williams, it stopped in the round of 16.

And the American missed this opportunity to touch Margaret Court's record of 24 grand slam wins.
