Record premiums for countries participating in Euro 2020

Before going into the details of the individual bonuses, let's take a look at the collective part. At each international competition, the participating countries receive a sum of money from the organizing body resulting from the overall revenue of the tournament. UEFA plans for Euro 2020 a total of 371 million euros to be redistributed among the 24 participating nations, the highest amount in the history of the European championships.

In detail, each participating nation is guaranteed to receive a minimum of 9.5 million euros.

Then there are "bonuses": a victory in the group stage earns 1.5 million euros, a draw 500,000 euros.

Qualifying for the round of 16 adds 2 million euros in the piggy bank, 3,250,000 euros more for a quarter-final, add 5 million euros for a semi-final, until reaching a payment of 10 million d 'euros for the winner of the tournament and 7 million for the finalist.

If the Blues win all their matches, the French Federation will therefore receive a check for 34 million euros.

A lower premium for players than in 2018

The FFF will donate 30% of this sum to the 26 players and the four members of the staff of the selection, according to a system already in place previously.

For Euro 2020, this means that in the event of a perfect course, the Blues and their staff will share more than ten million euros, or 340,000 euros each.

By way of comparison, at the 2018 World Cup, the world champions each received a bonus of 400,000 euros, then increased to 550,000 euros by the federation.

If the Germans win all their matches, they will receive 400,000 euros each.

Money that won't fit in their pockets

"This amount is very far from what will remain [to the Blues]", explains the consultant Guy Roux, in the show Europe 1 Sport.

"Who will pocket a lot of money? Urssaf (18%), taxes (45%)", he explains at the microphone of Lionel Rosso.

Marc Libbra, former OM player, also defends this amount on Europe 1. “If France is European champion, there is money coming in, so we reverse it, that's normal. we allow ourselves to give this sum, it is because it has been calculated and that behind, the federation wins even more. "

The Blues have also gotten into the habit of donating part of their bonuses, as for the benefit of associations the day after the victory at the 2018 World Cup. "We read here and there that they are going to give them back to the employees of the French federation. ", notes the former coach of AJ Auxerre. "And many players, including Kylian Mbappé, have a foundation that they feed with the money they earn," continues Guy Roux.

A finding shared by journalist Laurent Jaoui on Europe 1: "These players do not forget where they come from. These sums are not vital for them. 340,000 euros for seven matches, so around 50,000 euros per match, yes that's a lot. But we know for example, Kylian Mbappé gives money to Bondy (his hometown, Editor's note). I have the impression that these players do not forget where they come from. come, and that money will be well spent. "
