Walker and Sterling subjected to racist abuse after City defeat

Manchester City striker Raheem Sterling and fellow defender Kyle Walker were subjected to racist abuse on Instagram after their team's 1-0 defeat by Chelsea in the Champions League final in Porto last night, Sky Sports said.

The network stated that the players received pictures of monkeys after the match.

Sterling was subjected to similar abuse after City beat Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League semi-finals.

"The racist abuse sent to these players last night is appalling and we don't want it on Instagram," a representative of Facebook, the owner of Instagram, said in a statement today, Sunday.

"There is no quick silver bullet to these challenges, but we are committed to doing everything we can to protect our community from abuse," the statement added.

Several Premier League players have also been subjected to racist abuse over the past few months, including Manchester United's Anthony Martial, Liverpool striker Sadio Mane and Chelsea's Reece James.

Manchester United striker Marcus Rashford said he had received a lot of racist abuse after his team's defeat in the Europa League final against Villarreal last Wednesday.

In February, the English football authorities sent an open letter to Facebook and Twitter, asking them to address such abuse.

Instagram announced new measures in this regard, while Twitter pledged to continue to address these practices.
