Hamburger SV relies on Tim Walter in their fourth attempt to get promoted to the Bundesliga.

As the club announced on Tuesday, the 45-year-old will be the new coach of the Hanseatic League and will take over the position of Horst Hrubesch, who had stepped in on an interim basis at the end of the season.

HSV had previously separated from Daniel Thioune.

Walter was most recently under contract with VfB Stuttgart before he had to vacate his post there early in December 2019.

Before that he had worked successfully for Holstein Kiel for a year.

The new coach receives a two-year contract and leads the sporting fortunes of the second division team after the summer break.

It will be presented at a press conference on Tuesday.

It will be a difficult task for Walter to lead HSV back to the Bundesliga after the next disappointment.

Christian Titz, Hannes Wolf and Dieter Hecking had also tried it since 2018 and, like Thioune, ultimately failed.
