"It feels crap not to be allowed to fight for an Olympic place, but for the future this is the best," the 28-year-old told the national handball team's site.

Persson was one of Sweden's top scorers in the World Cup in January before he was forced to cancel the tournament due to a concussion.

He was back for the Olympic qualifiers in March, but just over a week before the European Championship qualifiers in April, he injured his thumb.

He has been able to play with the thumb injury for his Ivry but now it is clear that he needs surgery.

"It has been a difficult decision.

I could have had a chance and operated on after the Olympics, but then I would also have known that I would be away from the club team almost all autumn.

Now there is a chance that I will be back again when the league game starts this autumn ", says Persson.

"But it's sour when I've trained and aimed for so long at the Olympics, which is one of the biggest things you can be a part of.

Now I can aim for Paris in three years! ”

Federation captain Glenn Solberg says that he thinks Persson made the right decision.

For the national team camp at Playitas in June, Persson will be replaced by Lugi's Theo Übelacher.
