Neuer welcomes the assumption of the presidency of the German Football Federation

Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer and captain of the German national football team assured that a woman assuming the post of president of the German Football Association "would not be a bad idea".

In statements published in the newspaper "Welt am Sonntag" today, Sunday, Neuer made it clear that he could imagine the presence of a woman in this position.

The president of the German Confederation became vacant after Fritz Keeler's resignation, due to his likening of Vice President Rainer Koch to Nazi Judge Roland Friesler.

When asked about his opinion of Bibiana Steinhaus Webb, who was a former referee, Neuer replied that he believed "the federation wants to occupy this position with a woman. This is not a bad idea."

Neuer also noted that Philipp Lahm, his former Bayern teammate, was "someone who could also occupy this position in the future."

Lam, who is the director of competitions for the European Nations Cup (Euro 2024) in Germany, said recently in the German sports magazine "Kicker" that he has no current ambitions to take over the presidency of the German Football Association.

Neuer welcomed the decision by Keeler and Friedrich Curtius, Secretary-General of the Union to step down after the power struggles that the Union witnessed in the past weeks.

Neuer said: "In the past few years, the situation has been very turbulent in the federation, it does not help. We have to focus on the sporting side. The unrest is always a handicap."

Bayern's team-mate Thomas Muller is returning to the German national team (Manschaft) in preparation for Euro 2020.

Neuer said Mueller would have a direct prominent role.

Mueller played his last 100 international matches in November before coach Joachim Loew removed him from his calculations a few months later.

Neuer said: "We have seen in Bayern Munich over the past months that Thomas Muller can shine."
