The German Olympic Sports Confederation has nominated the first 54 athletes for the Summer Games from July 23 to August 8 in Tokyo.

As the DOSB announced on Wednesday, there are athletes from the six sports of shooting, open water and pool swimming, sailing, sport climbing and table tennis.

The flag bearer of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, Timo Boll, will be there.

For the 40-year-old table tennis player, it will be the fifth Olympic start since 2004.

The first Tokyo participants to be nominated also include Rio medalists such as Monika Karsch and Christian Reitz (shooting), Petrissa Solja, Ying Han, Xiaona Shan and Dimitrij Ovtcharov (table tennis) as well as Erik Heil and Thomas Plößel (sailing).

According to the DOSB announcement, swimming world champion Florian Wellbrock has a special position, who has good prospects both in open water swimming and in the pool and has thus been nominated in two sports.

As a result, 55 nominations were made on Tuesday, but only 54 people were nominated.

There are purely formal reasons for the fact that a number of athletes have been nominated with reservations.

In pool swimming, for example, the international qualification standards were met by everyone, but the formal confirmation of the world association FINA for the allocation of quota places will not take place until June 30th.

In individual cases, athletes were also missing the necessary documents and evidence, which must be available by June 28th at the latest.

According to DOSB, the total number of Tokyo starters cannot yet be foreseen, as the qualifying competitions have not yet been concluded.

There were 407 German athletes in London 2012 and 452 in Rio.

Since the corona pandemic not only led to the postponement of the Olympics, but also to the postponement of qualifications, more nomination meetings are planned than usual.

The next dates are June 1st, June 15th and June 29th. If necessary, there will be a meeting on July 3rd or 4th. The closing date for entries to the International Olympic Committee is July 5th.
