Joachim Löw brings the veterans Thomas Müller and Mats Hummels, who he retired in 2019, back to the national soccer team for the European Championship.

The 2014 world championship duo is part of the 26-player squad that the national coach presented on Wednesday in Frankfurt am Main.

Even with his last squad nomination, the DFB head coach, who left after the European Championships, came up with a few surprises. Löw also called on striker Kevin Volland from AS Monaco and Freiburg defender Cristian Günter, who played his only international match in May 2014, as another returnee after years of absence.

Prominent names such as Julian Draxler, Julian Brandt, Jonathan Tah and Amin Younes are missing from the line-up.

Dortmund's captain Marco Reus (31) had declared that he would not participate in the European Championship "after a complicated, exhausting season" on Tuesday evening in consultation with Löw.

Most of the players are made by FC Bayern, of which eight professionals will be on the team.

The 18-year-old Jamal Musiala, who is also the youngest player in the squad, also belongs to the Munich block.

The also 18-year-old Florian Wirtz from Leverkusen was not appointed by Löw.

The EM, postponed by one year due to the corona pandemic, starts on June 11th.

The final will take place in London on July 11th.

During the great upheaval after the World Cup disaster in Russia in 2018, Löw retired Munich's attacker Müller and today's Dortmund defense chief Hummels together with Bayern defender Jérôme Boateng from the national team in spring 2019.

Müller (31) and Hummels (32) last played on November 19, 2018 in the Nations League in a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands in the national jersey.

Müller and Hummels could make their international comeback during the preparations for the European Championship on June 2nd in the friendly against Denmark in Innsbruck.

From May 28th to June 6th, Löw and the DFB team will complete a training camp in Seefeld in Tyrol.

The EM dress rehearsal will take place on June 7th in Düsseldorf against Latvia.

At the European Championship finals, the DFB selection will meet World Champions France (June 15), defending champions Portugal (June 19) and Hungary (June 23) in the group stage in Munich.
