• Stade Rennais captain Damien Da Silva was sent off late in the game in Monaco and will miss the last game against Nîmes.

  • His coach Bruno Génésio confirmed that the central defender had "most certainly" played his last match with Rennes.

  • Arrived in 2018, the former Caennais was greeted by many supporters who praised his investment.

He was probably dreaming of a better exit. Sunday evening, Damien Da Silva left the lawn of the Stade Louis-II (2-1 victory for Monaco) with his head bowed to return to the locker room before everyone else. Stunned, the central defender took the time to protest against the indisputable red card issued by referee Benoît Bastien. The Stade Rennais captain doubtless knew that he had just ended his adventure in red and black, on this filthy, uncontrolled tackle which cut poor Ballo-Touré's ankle. An action like his match, where he was in all the wrongs. Sad outing for one of the top dressing rooms, who probably has no taste for celebrating his 33rd birthday on Monday.

His last in the Rennes jersey will not be a good memory.

Caught up in speed by Ben Yedder on the first Monegasque goal, Damien Da Silva was again at fault on the second, by involuntarily deflecting Golovin's shot which took Alfred Gomis on the wrong foot.

In less than thirty minutes, the ASM had almost completed the case but the defender's ordeal did not end until the 87th, when he left his partners at ten.

"You will know why a little later"

The confirmation of the captain's departure has not been formalized by the Breton club. But Bruno Génésio's comments at a press conference last night leave little doubt. “He was very touched in the locker room. You will certainly know why a little later ”. A colleague raises: was it his last with Rennes? “Most definitely, yes”. The interest of several foreign clubs has been announced for a few weeks. According to Ouest-France, an offer of two-year extension had been offered to the central defender, in difficulty. But it was obviously accompanied by a substantial drop in salary.

Sad exit for Da Silva.

He arrived quietly, destined to enter his rotation and finally he will have been an integral part of the best era of the club.

Good luck in his next club and thank you for everything.

Arrived in 2018 from Caen, Damien Da Silva had been able to raise his level of play to establish himself as a central hinge holder in Rennes.

He was one of the architects of the “golden” season of 2019, when Rennes had shone in the Europa League, before seizing the Coupe de France by beating PSG.

The red and black captain, on the other hand, did not know how to get to the level of the Champions League and was living a complicated season.

Suspended for the last decisive match against Nîmes, "DDS" was greeted by many supporters on social networks.

"A true soldier always at the service of the team".

"A real leader, hard worker, a guy with great values".

Or.

"A guy who never cheated".

The statistics speak for themselves.

The former Caennais will have played 118 games, including 85 with the captain's armband, and scored eight goals.
