Borussia Dortmund has made the happy end of a changeable Bundesliga soccer season perfect with the arrival of the Champions League.

Three days after triumphing in the DFB Cup, BVB won 3-1 (2-0) at FSV Mainz 05 on Sunday.

Raphael Guerreiro (23rd minute) and Marco Reus (42nd) paved the way to victory by half time.

Julian Brandt (80th) made the preliminary decision.

Robin Quaison (90 + 1) scored the goal for the hosts in stoppage time with a hand penalty.

Eintracht Frankfurt, who lost 3-4 the day before at the relegated FC Schalke 04, will have to bury their dream of the premier class.

On matchday 27, the Hessians were still in fourth place with seven points ahead of the Dortmunders.

Even before the game against BVB, the Mainz team was able to celebrate the rescue from relegation and go into the game relaxed.

The Rheinhessen benefited from the results of Werder Bremen (0: 2 at FC Augsburg) and Arminia Bielefeld (1: 1 against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim) on Saturday.

"The players are fit, they celebrated too," said 05 coach Bo Svensson, who took over the zero five with seven first round points and saved them from the second division with 29 points under his direction.

Against BVB, the Dane changed the starting line-up to five positions.

Instead of the regular keeper Robin Zentner, Finn Dahmen (23) was used.

As the playing time increased, one could guess that the stay-in-class party had left its mark on the Mainz professionals. However, the BVB professionals who were self-confident after winning the cup against RB Leipzig (4: 1) made a lot of steam right from the start. The first big chance for the guests had Giovanni Reyna (17th), whose deflected 14-meter shot flew just wide of the gate to the left. Five minutes later, Guerreiro made it better and more precise: His half-left shot landed 1-0 in the right corner. Captain Marco Reus made it 2-0 after a pass from Jadon Sacho from close range.

Due to torrential rain with lightning and thunder, the players had to stay in the locker room for more than half an hour.

The Mainz sports director Christian Heidel was able to finish the interview at Sky just in time.

His criticism of the passively acting zero fives was appropriate (“We just let them play”), but without any trace of anger.

However, the Mainz team took a breath during the extended break in order to be a little more active and to counter the accusation of giving something away.

But three shots from Moussa Niakhaté (49th), Robin Quaison (51st) and Jean-Paul Boetius (53rd) just missed the opposing goal in quick succession.

In the 64th minute, BVB goalkeeper Roman Bürki prevented Danny Latza from scoring the next goal with a brilliant save.

It took Dortmund a while to get back to their game and not jeopardize their sixth win in a row. Only after a shot by Sancho (65th), which the 23-year-old Dahmen parried brilliantly, did they become livelier and more attentive again. Julian Brandt, who had been substituted four minutes earlier, made the preliminary decision after Erling Haarland had presented it.
