Even before the next possible German soccer championship, FC Bayern Munich can look forward to the Laureus Prize as Team of the Year.

After the outstanding season of last year's Champions League winner with a total of six titles, the Laureus World Sports Academy selected the professionals of the outgoing coach Hansi Flick as the best team on Thursday.

This year's winners were announced at a digital awards ceremony in Seville.

"This Laureus Award is now the crowning seventh trophy in a year that we will never forget," said CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge.

Bayern had already been named the winner in 2014.

Former basketball star Dirk Nowitzki, who was honored for his life's work in 2020, emphasized that the Bayern motto “Mia san mia” means more than just winning trophies.

“The duties that come with fame and success are also fulfilled.

The campaign against racism or the players' initiative #WeKickCorona are just two of the many projects that the club has launched, ”said Nowitzki.

The jury awarded the individual awards to tennis stars: for the men to the Spaniard Rafael Nadal and for the women to the Japanese Naomi Osaka, who campaigned for the Black Lives Matter movement on the way to the 2020 US Open title .

In other categories, prizes went to Formula 1 world champion Lewis Hamilton for his fight against racism, Egyptian soccer star Mohamed Salah from Liverpool FC for his social commitment and quarterback Patrick Mahomes from last year's Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.

Tennis icon Billie Jean King from the USA, who has campaigned for equality for decades, was honored for her life's work.

Canadian snowboarder Max Parrot received the award for his comeback after suffering from cancer. Chris Nikic won the audience vote for the sports moment: The 21-year-old American was the first person with Down syndrome to complete an Ironman triathlon.
