Swimmer Anita Lonsbrough became the first woman to carry the British flag at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics.

The British Olympic team leader Mark England says that they now want to pay tribute to the team from 1964.

- That troupe left a real historical legacy.

It was a great moment for women and I hope that this year's edition will leave a similar mark, he says according to Reuters.

For the first time in the country's history, this year it will have both a female and a male flag bearer.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) changed its rules last year and began allowing - and encouraging - countries to have a flag bearer of each sex.

Previously, it was an athlete who carried the country's flag at the inauguration, and of 26 British flag bearers at the Summer Olympics, only three have been women.

Sweden has also only had three women who have had the honor of carrying the Swedish flag: canoeists Agneta Andersson (1988) and Anna Olsson (2000) and swimmer Therese Alshammar in the latest summer games in Rio de Janeiro 2016. How Sweden chooses to do in Tokyo is still not finished.

The Tokyo Games will also be the first gender-balanced Olympics, with 49 percent female athletes and 51 percent male.

The Olympic Games in Tokyo will be decided between July 23 and August 8.
