The 26th edition of the Sharjah International Fast Chess Championship 2021, which kicks off this evening.
40 players with international titles will participate in the tournament: a senior international professor GM, an international professor IM and a professor of international federation FM, from 15 countries, among whom 15 national players will compete in cash prizes exceeding 25 thousand dirhams.
The organizing committee of the tournament held a press conference the day before yesterday, during which Sheikh Saud bin Abdulaziz Al-Mualla, the club's president, spoke about the arrangements made for the establishment of this tournament, which was suspended last year due to the Corona pandemic.
The events of the press conference were attended by: Vice President Imran Abdullah Al Nuaimi, Secretary General and Head of the Technical Staff Jamal Issa Al Midfa, representative of the Sharjah Sports Council Saeed Al Ajel, Chairman of the Strategic Planning Committee Wahib Jaafar Al Zarouni, Financial Director Ali Saeed Al Jallaf, Assistant Secretary General Omar Numan Al Ali, and CEO of the club, Rajaei Nouman Al-Sousi.
Sheikh Saud bin Abdulaziz Al-Mualla confirmed that the Sharjah International Championship is the first in nearly more than a year to be held on the chessboard since the emergence of the Corona pandemic, after the tournaments continued to be held "online".
He said: “More than 80 players from several countries applied to participate, but we preferred to limit the number to 40 players and their players only, after coordination with the Crisis and Emergency Management Department in Sharjah, as it was decided to apply preventive and precautionary measures and conduct the necessary checks for players and referees before the tournament in compliance with the precautionary and preventive protocols. .
Sheikh Saud bin Abdulaziz Al-Mualla added: “The organization of these events aims to provide an important opportunity for the national team and club players to qualify and prepare them for the international tournaments that the club intends to organize in the future after the gradual recovery of society from the Corona pandemic.”
The president of the Sharjah Cultural Chess Club concluded his remarks, confirming that the President of the International Federation, the President of the African Chess Federation, the officials in charge of the sports movement in the country and the heads and members of the boards of directors of the Federation and chess clubs have been invited to attend the opening, which will be held in a simplified and brief way.
