Coronavirus Wimbledon canceled for the first time since WWII
Wimbledon will return after a blank year.
The All England Law Tennis (AELTC)
, the organizer of the tournament, has announced that the 2021 edition, which will be played from June 28 to July 11, will have a minimum of
25% of the capacity in the stands
. Last October, after studying the different possibilities, the AELTC reconsidered three alternatives: a tournament with all the fans, a reduced capacity or closed doors. One month after the start of the Grand Slam, the organization has already opted for the option of a capacity with reduced capacity.
The championship, suspended in 2020,
will begin on June 28
, a week after the
Boris Johnson
Government
lifts the restrictions related to Covid. Currently, traveling to the United Kingdom is quite complicated due to the various conditions imposed on travelers arriving from outside the country: PCR before flying, 10-day quarantine and diagnostic tests for Covid during confinement. That is why the organization has chosen these dates to contest the competition, since the relaxation of the measures will allow the public from other countries to attend Wimbledon.
In addition, the AELTC has announced that in 2022 the
middle Sunday will
no longer be celebrated
,
a tradition that occurs on the Sunday of the middle of the tournament when the activity to take care of the turf of the courts is stopped.
The championship was suspended the previous year due to the coronavirus pandemic, the first time since 1945 due to the end of World War II, however, Wimbledon was the only entity in the entire tennis circuit that had insurance against pandemics and, after the event was canceled, he received compensation of 110 million pounds (114 million euros).
