Ronald Koeman is happy with what Frenkie de Jong is currently showing at FC Barcelona.

The trainer believes that the Orange midfielder did not show his good side for the first time this season against Villarreal (1-2 win) on Sunday.

"He is just doing very well. He brings a lot offensively, covers a lot of meters and defends with him. He is very important to this team", said Koeman about De Jong, who came over from Ajax in the summer of 2019.

"He has improved a lot since he plays here. You cannot compare the Dutch league with the Spanish. The level is higher here and there is more competition."

Partly thanks to De Jong's input, Barcelona is working on a very strong series.

The Catalans only lost to rival Real Madrid in the last twenty league matches.

Furthermore, there were sixteen wins and three draws.

On Sunday, Koeman's team got a new boost in the title race by winning itself and seeing competitor Atlético Madrid lose at Athletic Club.

Based on loss points, Barcelona is now in the best position.

Koeman sees fatigue in his players

There are still five rounds to go in La Liga and Koeman notices that the busy season is physically taking its toll on his players.

"We played a lot of games. This week we also had to play on Thursday and Sunday," he said.

"We have to accept the calendar, but I think we should talk to UEFA about the calendar of the bigger clubs. It takes a lot of energy."

Barcelona will play at home against Granada next Thursday.

Three days later, the 26-time national champion pays a visit to Valencia.
