It does Demi Vollering a lot that she booked her first major victory as a professional cyclist with Liège-Bastogne-Liège on Sunday.

The 24-year-old Dutch benefited from good preparatory work by teammate Anna van der Breggen and finished in the sprint.

"This is great. Anna and the rest of the team did a really great job today. That I could finish it ... It's fantastic," said Vollering, after which she could no longer contain her emotions.

"I am very grateful that they did this for me. It is a great team. I want to thank everyone."

Vollering, who is seen as one of the new big names in women's cycling, was already very close to her first big victory twice recently.

However, she had to settle for second place in both the Brabantse Pijl and the Amstel Gold Race.

"I really think Liège-Bastogne-Liège is a great race", said the Team SD Worx rider.

"Two years ago I was third here in my first year as a professional. It is really a dream come true that I now win here."

'You don't want to sprint with Vos'

Vollering ended up in a group of five, to which Marianne Vos did not belong.

The leader of Jumbo-Visma had to let go of the rest of the favorites in the difficult final kilometers.

"It was very tough on the climbs", Vollering looked back.

"At one point we were away with a group and I was glad that Marianne Vos was not there in the end, because you don't want to sprint with her."

Vollering can look back on a beautiful spring.

In addition to her victory in Liège and her strong performances in the Brabantse Pijl and the Amstel Gold Race, she also finished in the front at the Waalse Pijl, the Ronde van Vlaanderen, Strade Bianche and Omloop Het Nieuwsblad.
