National team striker Robin Quaison played a big role when Mainz crushed Bayern Munich's gold celebration.
Mainz took the lead after just three minutes through Jonathan Burkardt.
Just over half an hour later, Robin Quaison doubled the home team's lead when he nodded the ball in from close range, past a chanceless Manuel Neuer.
Quaison were substituted 68 minutes into the game.
Mainz held off and defeated Bayern Munich 2-1.
Lewandowski reduced in the end for the away team.
A victory for Bayern Munich had secured the league gold, they will instead have to wait another round as they can secure the league gold at home against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
The home team took three important points and now has five points down the bottom team.
