Ajax coach Erik ten Hag was not in favor of giving a number of players a rest on Sunday before the game with RKC.

The team from Amsterdam recorded a 0-1 victory in Waalwijk in the strongest formation.

"In this phase, the points are expensive," said Ten Hag, who will face AS Roma with his team in the Europa League on Thursday, at

"Look at what happened with Bayern Munich and Manchester City. It sends a signal when you give a lot of players a rest. My players are fit, so I just started with my strongest team."

Both Manchester City (1-2 against Leeds) and Bayern Munich (1-1 against Union Berlin) failed to win on Saturday.

Both teams played with a significantly changed team compared to their Champions League matches a few days earlier.

Ajax, which has to make up for a 2-1 deficit against Roma in the return of the quarterfinals on Thursday, booked a relatively easy victory over RKC thanks to a nice goal by S├ębastien Haller.

Ten Hag expects to have Stekelenburg available soon

In Waalwijk, Kjell Scherpen, who heralded the 1-1 against Roma with a blunder, started again under the bar at Ajax because Maarten Stekelenburg is still injured.

Ten Hag is hopeful that the 38-year-old Stekelenburg will be able to play against Roma again.

"Maarten has already trained and it is the intention that he will be able to train fully again tomorrow and the day after tomorrow", continued Ten Hag.

"If all goes well, we hope he will be available again on Thursday."

Incidentally, AS Roma did start the home game against Bologna on Sunday with a significantly changed team.

The team of trainer Paulo Fonseca won the dress rehearsal for the match with Ajax 1-0.
