Miguel López Abril, known in the world of basketball as 'Miguelito', died this Sunday at the age of 66.
Born in Hospitalet de Llobregat,
he trained in the lower categories of FC Barcelona
, a team with which he made his debut in ACB in the 1972-73 season.
López Abril was one of the best Spanish point guards of the 70s. With the Barça team, in which he played for seven seasons, he won the Copa del Rey twice (1977-78 and 1978-79).
He was also
runner-up in the Korac Cup
in 1975, after losing the final with Cantú.
Later, he went on to play for
Bàsquet Manresa, Caja de Ronda and Joventut de Badalona,
retiring in the 1984-1985 season, after defending the Caja Álava shirt, now Baskonia.
He was
international nine times with the Spanish team
, with which, under the orders of Díaz Miguel, he played the 1975 Eurobasket, in which Spain came fourth.
After concluding his career as an active player, he went to the benches.
He trained several teams in the LEB
(Castelló and Sabadell)
and EBA categories, and later joined the technical staff of FC Barcelona, as a coach in the lower categories.
Hundreds of players passed through his hands, including Juan Carlos Navarro and Pau Gasol.
La Bomba, in a digital talk in EL MUNDO, recognized years ago that Miguel López Abril was the coach "with whom I most identified."
