It was during the World Cup qualifier against Serbia last Saturday that Christiano Ronaldo thought he had made it 3-2 to Portugal and decided the meeting.

But instead the goal was wrongly ruled out, which made Ronaldo angrily throw his captain's armband on the ground.

The reaction was condemned by many - but it brought something good.

Picked up

The bracelet was picked up by a firefighter on duty.

"Ronaldo was upset and he threw the captain's armband so it landed right next to me," firefighter Djordje Vukicevic told Reuters.

Together with his colleagues at the Belgrade Fire Brigade, Vukicevic put the bandage up for auction to raise money for six-month-old Gavrilo Djurdjevic, who suffers from spinal muscle atrophy.

For Gavrilo and his parents, the gesture was unexpected with incredible joy.

"We can not believe that some people, who do not know us, would take the bracelet auctions out there to help our child," Nevena Djurdjevic told Reuters.

The winning bid for the captain's armband was 7,500,000 dinars, around SEK 650,000.

Playing football with or without an audience does not seem to matter for the result.

However, the judges are affected.
