WELT AM SONNTAG:

Mr. Hartwig, during your time at HSV you made it into the national team.

On May 22, 1979 you made your debut - as the second dark-skinned national player after Erwin Kostedde.

Jimmy Hartwig:

Erwin and I opened the door back then, even if there were many reservations.

"Game changer" would be called today.

I just met Gerald Asamoah and Steffi Jones in a joint interview, they both said to me that Erwin and I paved the way for all black national players today.

Erwin and I had to take so much in the past and are still fighting everyday racism today.

WELT AM SONNTAG:

There was a lot of hostility in the stadiums at the time.
