Welch has previously mainly refereed in the men's National League and the women's FA Cup final at Wembley.

But on Monday, the 37-year-old will take on the League Two meeting between Harrogate Town and Portvale.

She thus becomes the first woman to referee a match in an English professional league for men.

In 2010, however, assistant Amy Fearn had to jump in for the regular referee in the Championship.

But Welch will be the first regular female referee ever in a professional match in England.

- The last ten years I have put in an extremely large amount of work and having the opportunity to work with the English Football League is fantastic for me, says Welch.
