National coach Roberto Martínez of Belgium is calling for larger selections at the upcoming European Championship.

Due to the full football calendar, the Spaniard would like to bring 26 or even 27 players instead of the usual 23.

"Then you can add an extra defender, midfielder, forward and possibly a goalkeeper. I have already discussed that with other national coaches, such as those from England and Italy. We hope that UEFA will think about it," Martínez said on Tuesday after the World Cup qualifier. against Belarus, which was defeated by no less than 8-0.

The national coach sees this expansion of the selections as the next step to lighten the competition burden and prevent injuries to overloaded players.

Due to the corona pandemic, the schedule is busier than ever.

"Admitting five substitutions was a first step to guarantee the quality of the matches. The next step is to allow one extra player per line," said the 47-year-old Spaniard.

Belgium will play a European Championship, the Nations League and World Cup qualification for the next eighteen months, Martínez summed up.

"It will be a very special period. We are going to need a lot of players."

The European Championship lasts from 11 June to 11 July and will in principle take place in twelve different European cities, including Amsterdam.

However, this could change due to the corona pandemic.
